TORI J. SABATINI AND TRASHLESS THURSDAYS
Posted by KidsKonserve - July 20, 2009

"Trashless Thursdays was launched with a short presentation to each of our classes on the environment, we introduced Kids Konserve and how to pack waste-free lunches and other things we can do to help. We then had a poster contest and had a competition to see which grade could generate the least amount of trash. Now we are going towards an entire school goal of getting all of the trash down to 1 garbage can full or less. Motivation was really good at first, and we are trying to keep the spirit by still promoting and reminding and will carry it through the school year and hopefully will add Trashless Tuesday next year! In addition, Tory J. Sabatini has decreased their weekly communication envelopes from around 7-10 sheets of paper to one! And they hope to go completely paperless next year!!! "

Are All Three R's Created Equal?
It is important to remember that the 3 R’s of waste reduction are not equal! Reducing the volume of products we consume is the most important of the 3 R’s because it reduces our impact on the environment the most. Reusing materials comes next in environmental importance. When we reuse, we save more than just the material that a product is made of. Large quantities of energy that we cannot see and don’t think about ... "embedded" energy ... are also part of every product, built into it from mining to manufacture to disposal with lots of transportation involved at every state of its life. Recycling, while an important effort, results in the least reduction of our environmental impact; it saves materials but uses a great deal of energy to collect, sort, clean, melt or pulp and re-manufacture those materials into new items. Each round of recycling also diminishes the quality of the recovered materials. For these reasons, it is important to reduce and reuse as much as possible and only then resort to recycling. |

Kid Knews Planet Points
- If just 10% of cell phone users unplugged their charger while they were not in use, it would save enough energy to power 60,000 homes for a whole year.
- If we replaced just one out of every five paper greeting cards we buy with a paperless alternative, we could save 130 million pounds of wood, 183 million gallons of water, and 39 million pounds of greenhouse gas emissions.
- Reduce! Reuse! Recycle! Producing new paper, glass, and metal products from recycled materials saves 70 to 90 percent of the energy and pollution, (including CO2), that would result if the product came from virgin materials. Recycling a stack of newspapers only four feet high will save a good-sized tree. Please... Reduce, Recycle and above all REUSE!!
