My "Eco" Wish for 2010
Posted on December 21, 2009 02:43 by Christy

January is a time of renewal and fresh beginnings.  A time to think about the greater good and a time to make resolutions for the year ahead.  We at Kids Konserve are making resolutions, in addition to having had one of our own "Eco Wishes" granted!

We are asking ourselves and you, "If I could change or wish one thing for the greater environmental good in 2010 what would it be?"

Here is what Kids Konserve's wishes are:

Chance: I wish that I would never have to see another plastic bag stuck in a
tree or bush as I drive down the freeway.

Lynn:    I would like to see less "garbage" bins filled with recyclable materials
like glass bottles and aluminum cans.

Christy:  I wish that restaurants/fast food restaurants would reduce packaging
                          waste.

Wendy:  I wish that our culture would recognize the irony of manufacturing
"disposable" products often made from materials that persist in our
                          environment for generations.

Gene:    I wish we would all treat the environment as well as we treat our
                          children.

McLaine (6 yrs. old):  I would like to help the birds to not have any pollution from
                                              the factories.

We want to hear from you.  What is your one wish for the environment this New Year?  We will pick five wishes we receive and post them on our site for Earth Day.  In addition these five 'winners' will receive a copy of of the book, "Bag Green Guilt".

A look back to 2009 and Kids Konserve's New Year's resolutions
included things like reducing the amount of trash going into community landfills, making it easier for families to pack waste-free, and giving back to schools by providing fundraising monies to help support their green efforts.

Wishes Granted:  Kids Konserve is growing thanks to you!  Kids Konserve was awarded this year with a grant from the New York based women's clothing company, Eileen Fisher, which will enable us to continue providing more and researching more innovative products. The grant was given to a woman owned business who is working toward environmental changes in society.  We are honored beyond belief to have received this grant.  Thank you Eileen Fisher!

I wish that people would learn to stop using plastic bottles, and start carrying BPA Free Waterbottles!

My plan this year is to have at least one stainless steel bottle for each of my kids and myself. And then I plan to eliminate baggies from our lunches by the end of the school year.

I wish that more eating establishments were eco-friendly. Instead of styrofoam leftover packaging, I would like to feel comfortable bringing my own reusable containers and bags.

I have started taking my own reusable food storage when eating out or take away but this year, I am planning to reinforce that further.

My wish is that it wouldn't take a water shortage (which is happening in our area right now) to make us realize how much we take clean potable water for granted.

I wish that littering in general would stop because not only do I hate to see plastic cups and trash being thrown out windows, I see people throwing lit cigarrettes out their car windows.

I wish people would recycle the obvious!

I wish for a return to valuing quality goods that are built to last. Our shortsighted demand for cheap cost up front leaves our children paying the bill for the long-term costs of the sea of cheap goods being shipped from across the globe, only to end up in our landfills within a couple years. Willingness to invest in quality would allow more manufacturing (and jobs) here; as it is, US companies are forced to manufacture in China to remain competitive.

My wish is that more parents would realize that by choosing to use cloth diapers versus disposable would help decrease the amount of waste in our landfills. Choosing to use cloth diapers would make a big impact on our future generations!

I'd like people to recycle more and be more careful with all the materials that are out there. recycle. repurpose.

I wish fewer people would leave their cars running for so long in the winter, polluting our air with exhaust.

I wish that eco-friendly was a little more wallet friendly. Yes, I understand the overall savings. Yes, I live a life that greatly reduces waste compared to most. But I still wish my wallet was a little fatter so I can do what I feel is right.

I also wish recycling was more greatly available so Lynn's wish a bit easier for people! I save recycling and take it home where I can recycle. I bring home batteries from work so I can recycle/dispose of them properly, but I would like to see it be easier for people. I also wish people would take the time to recycle and maybe READ the containers about what can and can't be recycled. Yep, those are things I wish for.

I wish that ALL grocery stores would stop providing plastic bags...requiring all of us to carry our own cloth bags when getting grocieries.

I wish that everyone would realize how EASY it is to take just one step toward recycling, reusing and reducing our consumption of things. To just stop and think before they purchase. We all can do so much by educating our family and friends to make better choices.

My wish is that people would come together and plant more community gardens... fresh fruits and veggies, new friendships, and less (or no) meat!

If I could change or wish one thing for the greater environmental good in 2010 it would be to ban plastic bags throughout my home, the United States. To a great extend, I believe that ceasing to provide disposable bags at retail/grocery/shopping stores would compel many more people to use re-usable bags, and the positive repercussions would reverberate so far!
